Lake Nicaragua: It is the largest fresh water lake in Central America and number 10th in the world. It houses fresh water sharks (Bull Shark, Carcharhinus leucas) tuna, alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula) a primitive ray-finned fish.

It was considered as a divine personage by the first indigenous people that settled down in this area between Rivas and San Jorge; it was called Nic-ahuac which in Nahuatl language means “Here near by the water” or “Home”. And according to their prophet’s prophecy it was described as a huge lake with two volcanoes on the surface, they called Ometepetl or Two Hills Island. It is said that when the Spaniards first got onto main land they didn’t know it was a fresh water lake until their horses in a desperation attempt to get water they run down over the lake and drunk from it.

Also, this lake houses many different species of migratory and resident birds as: American Black Skimmer, Great Egret, Tiger Egret, Limpkin, Belted king fisher, Spotted sandpiper, Osprey, Northern Jacana, Anhinga.

Granada City

This city is considered as the oldest city in the Americas founded on main land by Spaniards. It was established by Captain Francisco Hernandez de Córdoba in December 8th 1524, near an indigenous people settlement called: “Xalteva”.

Their homes were made of adobe or sugar cane, mud and eggs to solidify the buildings and polishing them.

And in order to avoid any kind of struggle in between Spaniards and the indigenous people, they built up walls to separate themselves from each other. This separation started from the Palenque Street to Guadalupe Church, causing the unhappiness of many indigenous people.
Because of its location, being at the shore of Lake Nicaragua, it gave easy access to export goods to Spain, thus, attracting greedy pirates from England, France and Holland looking for gold , who got into the city from San Juan River and set afire for three times, making this situation the reason why its original pure colonial architecture was changed. Nonetheless, it got up from the ashes and started a new phase of reconstruction.

It has 531 km2 and 116,000 inhabitants (approximately). Also, Granada has been growing in the tourism and real estate industry, rewarding it with title of the Capital of Tourism in Nicaragua.
